Saint Lucia is an island in the eastern Caribbean Sea and is part of the Lesser Antilles. It is named after Saint Lucy of Syracuse and its capital city is Catries where one third of the whole island's population resides.
The culture of Saint Lucia is a mixture of various influences from its French, African and English heritage. The island has several cultural festivals which include La Marguerite, which represents the Rosicrucian order and La Rose, representing Freemasonry. The island also holds a carnival every year before the Lenten season but was moved to mid-July in order to attract more visitors. One of the points of interest in Saint Lucia is the world's only drive-in volcano, the Sulphur Springs which can be found in Soufriere. The island is also home to various rain forests, the Botanical Gardens and the Pigeon Island National Park, which also houses Fort Rodney, an old military base.
A huge chunk of Saint Lucia's visitors are part of a cruise and most of the tourists' time is spent in the Castries as well as in Marigot Bay, Soufriere and Gros Islet.
