Located in Lee County, in the state of Florida, Sanibel City has a small population of 6,000 people. Nestled in Sanibel Island, this quaint American city is 97% white.
Linked to the mainland by the Sanibel causeway, tourists will be amazed at how the island has preserved more than half of its area in its natural state. The island inhabitants are passionate protectors of their land, and over the years they have maintained the island to be a wildlife refuge.
The city was fortunate to have former CIA Director Peter Gross as one of its loyal residents, since it was Gross, who worked for the island's eventual incorporation, and also served as its first mayor. He was the Congress representative from 1989 until 2004, when he was appointed as CIA director.
Visitors to Sanibel may engage in various activities such as trekking and kayaking through the J.N. Darling National Wildlife Refuge. A must- see is the Sanibel Lighthouse, which is located in the eastern part of the island. With a sub-tropical climate, the city offers its residents and its visitors the privilege of having fun under the sun, no matter the time of year.
