Santa Fe was once occupied by Indians until the Spaniards came. It was founded as the "La Villa Real de la Santa Fé de San Francisco de Asís" which means "The Royal City of the Holy Faith of Saint Francis of Assisi." It was created and named as capital in 1610. Because the town was established in 1610, thus, it is the oldest capital city in the US. The city is also proud to have the oldest standing church in the US.
