Sao Paulo began as a small Jesuit mission set stop a small hill close t o the River Tietê. The mission later grew into a trading post, and in the 1700s Sao Paulo was a bustling business center, the coffee trade hub in its corner of Latin America. By the 1800s, the city became one of the largest coffee exporters in the world. The city underwent further changes in the 50s when major car manufacturers such as GM, Volkswagen and Ford recognized the city's potential and set up shop there, making the city the largest car manufacturer in Latin America.
Despite the little problem of traffic jams (what big city doesn't have traffic jams?) Sao Paolo is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city that no visitor to Latin America should ever miss. Aside from its commerce Sao Paolo is famous for its nightlife that extends even to the morning hours. Sao Paolo's nightclub scene draws flocks of tourists who come to listen to international deejays or for the older set, sway to the samba or the tango.
