Dr. L.D. Roberts from New York founded Seaside city when he moved to the Peninsula in 1887. Back then, Seaside was known as East Monterey. Roberts renamed the area to Seaside in 1890 and established a Post Office and served as postmaster for over 40 years. In 1954, Seaside was incorporated. Seaside served as a home to the Us Army Base Fort Ord. However, in 1993, the soldiers including their dependents were relocated and the community's military industry was slowly replaced with an education sector. In 1990, California Sate University Monterey Bay was founded on the former Fort Ord lands.
