Shenzhen is a city located in Guangdong province, in the southern part of China. In 1980, as china opened its doors to foreign investors, the city was designated as the first Special Economic Zone which offered lower tax rates, lesser restrictions to business investments, and a string of incentives.
Being converted into an economic zone is the best thing that ever happened to the city, as it had previously been an undeveloped town with merely 20,000 people as inhabitants. It was then called Bao'an. Its strategic location, being nestled between Hong Kong and Guangzhou, made government officials see its potential as a perfect location for establishing several industries. Today, Shenzhen is home to the light industry, as well as the center for the production of innumerable and varied products, from arts and crafts to building materials.
As the city developed, more and more people relocated to the area, and from a mere 20,000 heads, the city is now boasts a population of 204,972 people.
Shenzhen has its own national stock exchange, the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE). It is also home to the world's ninth tallest building, the Shun Hing Square (Diwang Building).
