Sigatoka is a commercial town located in Fiji's Coral Coast region. Situate on the island of Viti Levu at the mouth of the Sigatoka River, the town has a population of 7,940 inhabitants as of Census data in 1996.
When tourists visit Sigatoka, the first thing they notice is the intricately-designed mosque that towers above the town, and provides a splendid view of the skyline. It is the Sigatoka Sand Dunes, however, which truly captures the fancy of most visitors. The dunes are located near the exotic Kulukulu village. The Kula Eco Park is another fascinating facility, as it houses exotic birds numbering up to five hundred heads from a hundred species.
Incorporated as a town in 1959, Sigatoka is being lead by a mayor and a ten-member town council. Two active political parties, the United Fiji Party (SDL) and the National Federation Party (NFP) won the seats in the recent election.
