Sligo is a country town in County Sligo of Ireland. In Irish, the name 'Sligo' translates to 'Sligeach', which means 'Shelly Beach'. The name stems from the abundance of shellfish found in the area as well as for the Shell Middens, which are Stone Age food preparations areas that are found there as well. It is the 2nd largest urbanized area in Connacht and is home to the Sligo Institute of Technology as well as to St Angela's College.
The town is served by a network of roads, which includes the N4 Road, which leads to Dublin and the N16, which leads to Blacklion. The Sligo Airport also serves the town and the county of Sligo. It is located 5 miles from the town and is close to the Strandhill village, it is served by the Aer Arann airlines, which operate flights to Dublin and to Manchester in the UK. Bus routes in the city are operated by Bus Eireann.
