South Portland is a city located in the Cumberland County in the US state of Maine. Founded in 1895, South Portland is the 4th largest city in Maine and as of the 2000 census had a population of 23,324. The city is perhaps best known for its working waterfront. It overlooks the skyline of Portland and is situated on Portland Harbor. It is the principal city in the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford Metropolitan Area.
The area where South Portland now stands was first settled in 1630 and was incorporated as a town in 1895. In 1898, the town was incorporate into a city. Several villages are found in South Portland and they are Ferry Village, Knightville, Ligonia, Pleasantdale, Skunk Hill, Willard, and Town House Corner.
South Portland has a diverse economy and aside from its working waterfront, it also has a large retail center. Being the home of the Portland-Montreal Pipe Line, millions of barrels of oil are shipped to the city each year.
