St Kitts, formally known as Saint Christopher Island is an island located in the West Indies and together with the Island of Nevis, it forms the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. It is located in close proximity to the United States Virgin Islands and is only an hour away by plane from the USVI and from Puerto Rico. The island lies 1,300 miles southeast of the state of Miami and has a land area of around 68 sq miles. The city has a population of around 35,000 - a majority of whom are African descent. Presently, the island is the smallest and the newest sovereign state in America. The city has a literacy rate of 98% and English is the primary language used.
Sugar monoculture used to be the central center of St Kitts economy. That was, however, affected by the Great Depression and was closed by the government in 2005 due to its lack of profitability. Today, St Kitts economy revolves around tourism. Other growing industries in the island include transportation, non-sugar agriculture, construction, and manufacture.
In a bid to expand its tourist industry, St Kitts host its annual St Kitts Music Festivals that attracts tourists from neighboring countries.
