About Taipei
Taipei is a city located in Taiwan. It is deemed to be 'de facto' capital of the country by the Republic of China (ROC), the government that rules Taiwan.

Having had a turbulent history, Taipei is considered by Communist China as a renegade province, as it is being ruled by the republican Chinese government. Nonetheless, the city is the largest urbanized area in Taiwan, and is the center of political, economic and cultural activities in the region.

Founded in 18th century, Taipei had always been an important location for trade and business, one reason that made the Japanese acquire it after the first Sino-Japanese War in 1895. After Japan was defeated in the Second World War, the republican leaders of China took over Taipei and made the city the temporary, provisional capital of the ROC.

There are various museums and memorial halls in Taipei to visit. One is the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall erected in honor of former president, while another significant place of interest is the National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, erected in the memory of the Chinese republic's founder, Sun Yat-sen.
