About Tempe
Tempe is a city in the Maricopa County of the US state of Arizona. It has an estimated 2007 population of 174,091 and was named after the Vale of Tempe in Greece. It was incorporated as a city in 1894. The main campus of the Arizona State University is located in Tempe as well as the corporate headquarters of US Airways.

The city was original resided by the Hohokam who not only lived in the area, but also built canals to support the agriculture. In 1885, Tempe was chosen as the site for the Territorial Normal School, which later became the Arizona State University. With the completion of the Roosevelt Dam in 1911, the city was ensured enough water to meet the growing needs of the Valley Farmers. A year after the dam's completion, the state of Arizona was named the 48th state in the United States of America.

Tempe is served by several school districts. It also contains the state of Arizona's three major universities including the Arizona State University and the Maricopa County Community College.

Several freeways pass through Temp including Route 60, which runs east-west through the geographic center of the city. Valley Metro provides the bus service for the city while METRO light rail serves downtown Tempe and Arizona State University. The Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport serves the city and provides extensive air services to areas all over the US, the UK, the rest of North America and several cities in Hawaii. Tempe sister cities include Lower Hutt (New Zealand) and Timbuktu (Mali).
