Despite being one of the most progressive, most technologically-advanced cities in the world Tokyo has one special asset that most cities don't-its people. The capital of Japan is relatively small for its population, and the people that live and work in the city cram the city's high-tech subways, its high-end department stores and its many other establishments, as many during the daytime as during the evenings. Indeed, many have said that the activity and the hustle in New York is nothing compared to the busyness in Tokyo. However, despite this seemingly obvious downside Japan is still safe, clean and efficient, the model for modernity in its well-behaved form.
Tokyo has risen from several calamities that would have sent any contemporary city into extinction today. The city was razed to the ground in the 20th century, once by an earthquake and the second when it was leveled by enemy bombing raids. However, the resilience that the Japanese is known for rises to the occasion each and every time, and today Tokyo is a jungle of tall, glass skyscrapers, modern infrastructure, a hip, young and well-connected urban population, and the best in art and modern architecture. Tokyo is also a place of refinement and culture. Ueno Park is one place you can go for a bit of Japanese classical and modern art. Smaller independent galleries and museums are also sprinkled all around the city.
