Tusayan is located in Coconino County in the state of Arizona, United States. It is a resort town situated near the Grand Canyon National Park. Sparsely populated with only 562 people, the racial makeup of the town is predominantly non-Hispanic white at 53.4%, followed by Hispanics at 30.2%, and then by American Indians at 17.4%, and then by African-Americans at 1.1%. Other races comprise 13.9% of the population.
The town had a hard time incorporating in the 1990s, as previous law disqualified the town because its population did not reach the required number. In 2003, however, a new law was passed allowing communities with merely 500 or more people to be incorporated, as long as it was located near a national park or monument.
The community waited for five (5) more years before it finally considered incorporation for the second time, and as elections in 2008 revealed (with 69 saying NO and 56 saying YES), residents were still apprehensive about being incorporated as a community.
