Vilamoura is in the municipality of Loulé, in the Algarve, Portugal. Near it is the parish of Quarteira. Vilamoura is a resort and Marina which was started from scratch by a wealthy banker from founded by a businessman from Lisbon. In 1974 the resort started its operations and this is located 14.3 miles west along the coast from Faro and 266 kilometers from Lisbon. Reaching this place by plane, one enters the nearest airport at Faro. Vilamoura is one of Europe's largest tourist beach destinations.
The marina can berth over 1,000 vessels. Hotels which can range from 3 to 5 stars and luxury holiday, casinos, restaurants and bars are found here. Sport lovers can enjoy the array of sports clubs, a shooting range and many night clubs.
For a taste of history a preserved Roman Site and Museum is open to the public. It used to be a Roman fishing town and has old baths utilized by mariner in those times.
