Whistler is a resort town in British Columbia, Canada. It is incorporated as the RMOW or Resort Municipality of Whistler. Although its permanent population is less than 10,000, over two million tourists come to visit this resort town each year. It was named after the hoary marmot which is indigenous to the area. The codenames of Windows XP and Vista, Whistler and Longhorn, respectively, were taken from the town and a bar found under the town's mountain.
Whistler created the urban landscape with the thought of conserving the environment; therefore, the garbage dump was remediated to help turn around the dwindling population of black bears in the valley. Because most of its residents are conservationists, behavior modification was strongly encouraged and killing of bears are only done if everything else fail.
Whistler offers activities such as mountain biking and alpine skiing. Natural and man-made attractions in the area include the Whistler Mountain, Garibaldi Provincial Park, and Whistler-Blackcomb Ski Resort. Modern and peak to peak gondolas serve the resorts.
