In 1640, early settlers made it near Horn Pond, main source of the Mystic River, and were officially incorporated in 1642. Current towns of Woburn, Winchester, Burlington, and parts of Stoneham and Wilmington were also incorporated
By 1970s, the city experienced a water contamination crisis with incidence of childhood leukemia and other health complications linking it to probable exposure to volatile organic chemicals in the groundwater pumped from wells.
